Below are the course definitions of our curriculum valid for students registered IN the academic year 2022-2023.

Course Definitions

TINS 101 Introduction to Language Studies
(3 0 3) ECTS 6

The course introduces the students the nature of human languages and communication; linguistic knowledge and performance; and the underlying structure of the human language as a complex and rule-governed system. Together with the basic concepts and related terminology, the course examines the micro-linguistic features of language and their interrelationships in the context of phonetics (sounds of language), phonology (sound patterns), morphology (word structure), syntax (sentence structure), and semantics (meaning) to better understand the rules that govern the way communication is made possible in natural languages for the purpose of translation studies.

 

TINS 102 Advanced Reading and Writing Skills in English
(3 0 3) ECTS 6

The course aims to develop the advanced reading and writing skills of students to help their performance in translation. Reading exercises which focus on comprehension, vocabulary development, and study skills mean to prepare a solid thematic and linguistic  background for paragraph and  essay construction as well as the use of formal English grammar to enhance the comprehension, production and translation skills the students will be in need of.

 

TINS 103 Comparative English-Turkish Grammar I
(3 0 3) ECTS 6

The course is based on the ‘morphology’ of Turkish, combined with references to that of English. A wide range of topics are covered, among them, the study of words, the principles by which they are formed, and how words interact with one another within the language, the way words are used as ‘parts of speech’, and how they can take inflections to form different kinds of grammatical patterns. A comparative approach is adopted, with morphological items in Turkish being matched by closest possible equivalents in English. Translation practice is done at sentence level, mostly from Turkish into English. Students find the opportunity to see how morphological differences between the two languages can be dealt with to achieve equivalence in translation.

TINS 104 Comparative English-Turkish Grammar II
(3 0 3) ECTS 6

The course content builds upon the topic of TINS 103: ‘morphology’. The focus is primarily on Turkish, coupled with references to English. Two major topics are covered in detail: ‘syntax’ and ‘semantics’. Discussions on Turkish syntax include how words and morphemes come together to form phrases or sentences, and the way words and phrases are arranged in Turkish. Topics being studied with regard to Turkish syntax are accompanied by examples from English syntax. Later in the term, the fundamentals of Turkish semantics are covered. Among the topics discussed are different levels of meaning, the importance of communicating sense accurately, different ways of communicating a given message, the use of idiomatic language etc. Translation practice is done initially at sentence level, later in the form of paragraphs assigned as translation tasks.

TINS 105 Oral Communication in English I
(4 0 4) ECTS 3

The aim of the course is to help the students to be able to speak fluently with grammatical correctness and relevance at a reasonable speed. Guidance will be provided to the students to overcome the difficulties which are likely to occur during informal conversations, class discussions, oral reports and offer exercises to develop practical skills for effective communication. The course will cover basic types of speeches such as reflection, descriptive, how-to and informative speeches to enhance students’ communication skills. The students will also be encouraged to develop rhetorical skills and gain fluency in the English language with basic speech preparation techniques, including the use of visual materials and creative activities.

TINS 106 Oral Communication in English II
(4 0 4) ECTS 3

The aim of this course is to refine students’ speaking abilities by focusing on fluency, grammatical accuracy, and relevance at an increased speed. Emphasis will be placed on guiding students through challenges commonly experienced in interviews, presentations, and formal discussions providing exercises to develop practical communication skills. This course will delve deeper into advanced types of speeches, including persuasive, argumentative, and formal interview and debate speeches, to elevate students’ competence in communication. The students will be encouraged to hone their rhetorical skills and achieve fluency in English through advanced speech preparation techniques, incorporating more formal and also creative activities.

TINS 107 Introduction to Translation I: English-Turkish
(3 0 3) ECTS 6

With comparative analyses, the course aims to help students develop an understanding of accurate and appropriate written translation from English to Turkish by means of a good variety of grammatically advanced level sentences and short coherent texts with appreciation of different English structures and adhering to syntactically, semantically, pragmatically  and culturally correct forms of equivalent Turkish discourse constructions.

TINS 108 Introduction to Translation II: Turkish- English
(3 0 3) ECTS 6

The course aims to provide the students with the fundamental concepts and strategies of translation from Turkish to English and to foster their awareness and understanding of correct and natural discourse construction in the target language in consideration of the mode of communication, genre, register, pragmatic and cultural aspects.

TINS 180 History of the English Language
(3 0 3) ECTS 6

This course provides an in-depth exploration of the development and evolution of the English language from its early origins to its present-day global status. Students will examine the linguistic, social, and cultural factors that have shaped English throughout history. Through a combination of lectures, discussions, readings, and research, students will gain a comprehensive understanding of the major stages and influences that have contributed to the formation of the English language.

TINS 181 Text Analysis
(3 0 3) ECTS 6

The aim of this course is to improve students’ reading comprehension in English through systematic analysis of textual data. Students will experience different sentence patterns and expressions in various reading materials belonging to different genres. They are expected to be alert how meaning is created discursively in some. The course puts emphasis on the development of practical skills for effective communication with the material students are approaching. For this, students are expected to master basic elements of analytical and critical reading through approaching a wide variety of texts and develop basic inferential and logical skills to produce high quality argumentative compositions. They are expected to present their products orally.

TINS 182 History of Civilizations
(3 0 3) ECTS 6

The objective of this course is to assist students in gaining a comprehensive view of the social, political, cultural and artistic developments throughout Western civilization, spanning from the beginning of history to the Enlightenment. This course delves into the early, classical and the Middle Ages, Renaissance, Reformation and the Age of Reason aiming to equip students with fundamental insights into the defining features of the Western world while sharpening their abilities in critical reading and analytical thinking.

TINS 183 Lexis and Terminology I
(3 0 3) ECTS 6

The course aims to help students understand the basic system and the structural patterns of the English morphology, how they function as a system, morphology-based typological differences between Turkish and English and how the lexical features behave cross-linguistically, the lexical imposition of other languages on English through time, the basic competencies and skills in identifying, classifying and solving terminological problems and searching, selecting and evaluating terminological resources. The above objectives mean developing specific strategies as well as learning how to use available resources with a view to producing optimal translations. After completing the course, the students will have acquired the basic knowledge and insight into lexical structures and word formation processes in English and Turkish, the lexical production, analysis and skills mentioned and the application strategies in translation.

TINS 184 Lexis and Terminology II
(3 0 3) ECTS 6

In this course, students will learn a large number of words based on the pattern of combining forms. Words will be taught in meaningful contexts so that students can keep them in their memories for a long time. Also, reading passages selected from the book titled Fluency in English will be read and discussed in class, with a view to helping students to learn new vocabulary in memorable contexts. Moreover, students will be made to answer vocabulary questions in language exams. Also, they will find the chance to learn special terms commonly used in various disciplines. Also covered in the course are topics such as Dictionary Usage, Related Word Groups, Word Formation, Problem Words, Description Exercises, Exercises in Style, Colloquial English, Spoken English, Geo-political Names, Names, Titles and Abbreviations, Proverbs, and Euphemisms.

TINS 189 Turkish for Translators
(3 0 3) ECTS 6

Improvement of language and comprehension skills in Turkish through selected texts. Presenting grammar rules and analyzing language in context. Introduction of new vocabulary and new terminology. Active reading for critical thinking, problem solving, making inferences, and drawing logical conclusions within the context of translation. Analysis of Turkish literary works, scientific texts, and essays in terms of syntax, choice of words, context, and techniques of expression.

TINS 201 Sight Translation I
(2 2 3) ECTS 3

The course aims to prepare students for sight translation, a stepping stone for interpreting courses, and therefore, to enhance students’ acquisition of consecutive and simultaneous interpreting skills so as to prepare them for the translation market. The course mainly focuses on the skills necessary for students to acquire to do accurate and fluent sight translation. Throughout the semester students learn and practise diaphragmatic breathing, stage fright exercises, right posture, pronounciation and self-expression as the tools of both communication and interpretation. At the very beginning of the course, students are trained to read and understand English texts faster. They are then asked to paraphrase and summarize texts, focusing mainly on the content and ideas. They are guided gradually, step by step, to sight translate texts, into Turkish in the course.

TINS 202 Sight Translation II
(2 2 3) ECTS 3

Receiving efficient training in sight translation will certainly help to raise competence in written translation on the one hand, and pave the way for embarking on interpreting courses and exercises, on the other hand. This course as the continuation of TINS 201 aims to provide students with an understanding of the source text in Turkish and the challenges involved in producing a good sight translation into English. Therefore, the course is designed to equip students with advance skills of sight translation, through practising in various areas, including politics, diplomacy, law, economics, tourism, education, health, technology, social sciences, philosophy, sports, entertainment, etc. Thus, the course enables students to do accurate and fluent sight translation so as to be ready for consecutive and simultaneous interpreting.

TINS 203 Language Studies for Translation
(3 0 3) ECTS 5

The course aims to equip the students with the macro level language studies in an interdisciplinary manner, focusing on the social, psychological, and cognitive characteristics to help them better understand the language functions in the social, psychological and cognitive contexts. This way, students will better appreciate the reasons behind the content, functions and the forms of the texts, relating them to the mentioned contexts.

TINS 204 Introduction to Translation Studies
(3 0 3) ECTS 5

This course delves into the core concepts of translation and interpretation, by embarking on a historical journey, in order to equip students with a diverse arsenal of translation strategies and explore techniques tailored to different text types, from capturing the essence of a poem to conveying the precision of a scientific report. This course will help students apply diverse translation strategies to effectively convey meaning across different text types, use dictionaries for accurate and culturally sensitive translation and gain intellectual and practical skills to analyze the complex relationship between translation, interpreting, and cultural contexts.

 

TINS 205 Translation Technologies
(3 0 3) ECTS 5

Designed for students who wish to pursue a career in professional translation because using translation technologies is the first and the most crucial requirement of the translation industry. The course combines theoretical knowledge and practical skills in various CAT tools.

TINS 206 Translation-oriented Discourse Analysis
(3 0 3) ECTS 5

Based on the understanding that translation is not merely a structural equivalency oriented linguistic practice but also a socio-cultural, communicative, ideological and cognitive activity based on the constructed discourse, this course aims to provide the students with the theoretical and practical Discourse Analysis (DA) concepts, theories and methods to help them better understand a variety of functions embedded in discursive productions so that they can consider these functions in their translation practices.

TINS 207 Précis Writing and Translation
(3 0 3) ECTS 5

This course is meant to improve students’ skills in precis writing and translation by summarizing. Within the framework of the process of precis writing, various topics will be covered such as techniques of finding out the main idea, paraphrasing, summarizing, simplifying complicated grammar structures, as well as revising and organizing the written text, gaining familiarity with different writing styles, and finding out key points and shorten texts by omitting unnecessary details. Through frequent in-class writing exercises students find the opportunity to put into practice all they have learned. By the end of this course, students will come to a point where they will be able to craft well-written summaries both for the purpose of condensing ideas and for translations in summary form.

TINS 208 Rhetorics of Imaginative Writing
(3 0 3) ECTS 5

This course introduces students to the practice of close reading and extracting meanings from texts based on their use of rhetorical and narrative devices. Based on students’ analysis of rhetorical and narrative devices, they will write texts using such devices to create their own meaning.

TINS 281 Comparative Cultural Studies
(3 0 3) ECTS 6

Introducing students to various cultures from around the world with a particular focus on Anglophone societies. Helping students understand different cultures and become better language learners and translators/interpreters. The emphasis is on history, economy, demographics and sociopolitical structures, with a linguistic overview of various English speaking countries as well as European Union countries.

TINS 282 Machine Translation and Post-Editing
(3 0 3) ECTS 6

The aim of the course is to introduce translation students to the CAT tools that help human translators transfer the meaning of texts between languages more quickly and efficiently, and to amend the machine-generated version to achieve a satisfactory final product.

TINS 283 Translation History
(3 0 3) ECTS 6

Historians of translation studies usually set the beginnings of translation at Cicero and his remarks about the phenomenon called translation. Yet, translation is as old as human history, and having turned into an academic discipline in the second half of the 20th century, this field of study has made a great progress. This course will cover both the origins of and the modern approaches to translation in order to increase the awareness of students about the evolution of translation studies in Turkey and in the world.

TINS 284 Approaches to the Study of Language
(3 0 3) ECTS 6

The course aims to establish a descriptive record of the development of language studies starting from the beginning of the 20th century, focusing on the breakthrough theories, which shed light also to the development of translation studies. At the beginning of the 20th century, because attention shifted to the fact that not only language change, but language structure is systematic and governed by regular rules and principles, European and American Structuralism and its applications will be the initial focus. The course, then, focuses on Generativism, initiated by Chomsky, to understand both the fundamental commonalities among languages and the dynamically interacting deep and surface structure relations, also in the context of translation. Finally, studies with social and cognitive views of language accompanied by corpus studies will present the changing approaches, as reflected also in translation studies.

TINS 285 Translated Literature Studies
(3 0 3) ECTS 6

This course is a theoretical one devoted to the study of translated literature, on the one hand, and an applied one with student translation projects. In a globalized and mobile world, cross-cultural knowledge has become a must. Owing to border crossings in comparative literature and translation studies, literary translations as rewritings now serve as an object of investigation in the field of translation studies. Therefore, it is aimed that comparative studies of translated literature open a space for skills in reading, thinking, writing, and speaking through in-depth study of translated texts in a variety of genres. The course is also intended emphasize the part played by translation and re-writing in literary history.

TINS 289 Computer Assisted Translation
(3 0 3) ECTS 6

Designed as an elective course for the department, this course helps students learn to use CAT tools such as Linguee, SDL Trados Studio, Across, The Free Dictionary, Fluency Now, ProZ, MemoQ, Memsource, Translators Café, etc. Therefore, learning these programs will help students to produce more efficient translations in their future professional careers. This course provides information and practice on translation memory programs and localization techniques. The course also focuses on terminology and project management in translation.

TINS 301 Note-taking and Consecutive Translation I
(4 0 4) ECTS 4

The course focuses on the acquisition of the skills necessary for consecutive interpreting, such as active-attentive listening, efficient word recognition, listening comprehension, focus and concentration, anticipation, inferencing, note-taking, multi-tasking, automatization, written-oral text analysis, mini summaries, hierarchy of ideas, and mind-mapping. The course emphasizes various strategies used in consecutive interpreting, such as paraphrasing, splitting sentences, omitting, generalization, and mental rehearsal along with memory strategies. Further emphasis is on translator intelligence, memory, context, relevance, multiple encoding, and translator’s learning styles. The students are directed to use special symbols and contractions, and reproduce the message properly and clearly by referring to their notes and short term memories. In this course note-taking procedures and techniques for improving short-term memory are mainly studied and the practices on these skills provides background for consecutive interpreting course. Note-Taking and Consecutive Translation I is conducted in English.

TINS 302 Note-taking and Consecutive Translation II
(4 0 4) ECTS 4

The course focuses on advanced consecutive interpreting skills: analysis of the structure of speeches, analysis of the organization and development of ideas, identifying main and subordinate ideas. Emphasis on practice activities that center around recognition of the core ideas and messages, note-taking, multi-tasking, automatization, and mental rehearsal along with memory strategies. Further emphasis is on how to merge the subliminal “flow” state and conscious analytical state during the interpreting process. In this course note-taking procedures and techniques for improving short-term memory are mainly studied and the practices on these skills provides background for consecutive interpreting course. Note-Taking and Consecutive Translation II is conducted in Turkish.

TINS 303 Translation for Social Sciences
(3 0 3) ECTS 6

The course aims to provide students with theoretical information, extensive practice, translation criticism and discussions on the translation of social sciences texts.At the end of the semester, the students will be able to appreciate the distictive differences between the texts of social sciences, humanities, physical sciences,and  health sciences via the readings of a good number of articles and other texts, understand the basic steps in social science research and the related academic discourse, understand the characteristic features of social sciences, the challenges involved in the translation of social sciences texts, gain the basic skills to analyze social sciences texts, translate a variety of texts from history, sociology, social/cultural anthropology, linguistics, social psychology, media and cultural studies, etc. with appropriate strategies, be familiar with the most widely used basic terminology in social sciences, and evaluate and correct problems in translations (T-E/ E-T) with a critical eye.

TINS 304 Translation for Science and Technology
(3 0 3) ECTS 3

The aim of the course is to enable students to master certain characteristics of scientific and technical discourse through two-way translations of texts in respective fields. The students are expected to translate a variety of different authentic texts in the related fields into the target language. Through translation activities carried out, students will be able to develop awareness of the structural and terminological features of scientific and technical discourse.

TINS 305 Translation for Law
(3 0 3) ECTS 5

The course is centered on the idea of making students familiar with the language of law, as well as with the basic types of legal texts in English and Turkish. Stylistic and communicative features of legal texts are analyzed, with special emphasis on the cultural differences between the English and the Turkish legal systems, as well as on function-oriented approaches in legal translation. Students are provided with the opportunity to learn important terms widely used in English and Turkish law texts. Also, they are asked to translate different types of law texts from English into Turkish, and vice versa.

TINS 306 Introduction to Interpreting
(3 0 3) ECTS 4

The course is an introduction into simultaneous and consecutive interpreting and is mainly based on strengthening the interpretation skills of the students and preparing them for the next term and year where the emphasis will be on consecutive and simultaneous interpreting practices. Thus, this term will be hinged upon forming a sound basis for interpreting activities both in academic and professional aspects.

TINS 307 Translation for Medicine
(3 0 3) ECTS 6

The course is built on the idea of incorporating medical knowledge and terminology into translation skills, providing insight into various branches of medicine, and thus setting the stage for simultaneous interpreting in the science of medicine. Students are afforded the opportunity to translate various kinds of medical texts, gaining insight into topics such as characteristics of medical language, challenges encountered in medical translation, and strategies that can be used in translating medical texts.

TINS 308 Translation for Economics
(3 0 3) ECTS 5

This course sheds light on problems in translation of commercial & economics texts from English to Turkish and vice versa and how they can be solved. The course is very practical with students involved in practical translation tasks. It also introduces students to translation in such disciplines as economics, management, business, and commerce. The course aims at building the rudimentary skills of translation including, among other things, vocabulary building, colloquial expressions, using dictionaries, solving syntactic problems in translation, cohesion and coherence, culture in translation, and language varieties. Syntactic structures are also incorporated in this course. The basic economy terms and principles at the theoretical level are combined with practical translation strategies and techniques; and actual discussions on translation problems and faults are handled within the context of this course.

TINS 380 Summer Practice
ECTS 5

Enables students to work as a trainee for a government institution or private translation agency for a matter of three months during the summer period.

TINS 382 Popular Culture and Literature
(3 0 3) ECTS 6

This course introduces students to concepts relating to popular culture and popular literature. Theoretical concepts regarding “popular,” “culture,” and “literature” are introduced and applied to various media including literature, newspaper opinion pieces, editorials, graphic novels, film, music, and late night television. This course delves into the fascinating world of popular culture, exploring its connections to various critical lenses like Marxism, psychoanalysis, racism, feminism, and postmodernism. It moves beyond simply consuming pop culture and equip students with the tools to analyze it critically.

TINS 383 Literatures in English
(3 0 3) ECTS 6

This course aims to provide an understanding of worldliteratures in English through a broad chronological study of texts belongingto the canon of English literature as well as to literatures in translationthat speak from margins. The key concepts in post-colonial theory and post-colonialworld literatures are studied to gain insight as to how literature shapes andis shaped by culture. This includes the critical analysis of literary works fromnon-canonical world literatures in both their local context and their globaltransformations.

TINS 384 Language of Journalism
(3 0 3) ECTS 6

This course aims to examine the language of the texts in media in terms of headlines and context; developing awareness about the misuse of language in media. The major focus is particularly on media texts and elements of media discourse. This course aims to develop students’ understanding of how to analyze a range of media genres, drawing on (critical) discourse analysis and conversation analysis. In written discourse, headlines and elements such as coherence, cohesion, and use of modals in media discourse are analyzed while in spoken discourse, elements such as the use of politeness maxims, interruptions, and evasion are examined within the context of translation. In the meantime, socio-cultural aspects of media discourse are also examined. In addition, students will become familiar with the EU discourse as represented in media. Students will become capable of accurately translating while producing coherent and meaningful texts with proper choice of words, accurate spelling, and proper style in both English and Turkish.

TINS 385 Cultural Negotiations
(3 0 3) ECTS 6

This course aims to enhance students’ understanding and practice of translation within the context of intercultural communication and negotiation, creating intercultural and cultural awareness. The course focuses on various approaches/theories to intercultural communication, the effect of socio-cultural influences and cultural identity on intercultural communication, and the effect of cultural influences on social perception. During the semester, students’ intercultural competence and language skills will be improved. Students will become aware of a variety of identity issues and linguistic choices in the process of translation. Students will practice translating/interpreting texts/speeches while producing fluent, coherent, and meaningful texts/oral interpretations with proper choice of words, accurate spelling, and proper style in both English and Turkish.

TINS 386 Translation of Children’s Literature
(3 0 3) ECTS 6

This course is designed for students who are interested in translating children’s literature. The course is an exploration of many developmental and linguistic issues related to writing and translating for children.

TINS 387 Special Topics in Translation: Media
(3 0 3) ECTS 6

This course aims to enhance students’ understanding of a variety of media discourse genres, ranging from print media texts to broadcast talk. The major focus is particularly on the characteristics of media discourse in relation to wider social, political, and economic phenomena. Exploration of a wide range of media texts and elements of media discourse. This course aims to develop students’ understanding of how to analyze a range of media genres, drawing on (critical) discourse analysis and conversation analysis. (3 0 3) ECTS 6

Review of translation models and introduction of the translation criticism theories; comparative criticism of the texts translated into Turkish and vice versa; determination of adequacy, appropriateness or the quality of a translation using the learned models and theories.

TINS 389 Theories of Translation
(3 0 3) ECTS 6

Learning theories of translation. Analysis of different periods in the development of theories of translation. Understanding translation as a product, process, and a social phenomenon. Discussing the applications of translation theories. Examining translation problems in Turkey and the world.

TINS 401 Translation for Diplomacy and International Relations
(3 0 3) ECTS 6

This course is designed for the translation students who, on various national and international platforms, will be translating texts and speeches by politicians and diplomats that include the discourses of political, diplomatic and international relations. Hence, the course aims to acquaint students with world issues, foreign politics, and with the language of diplomacy in order to make them comprehensive translators and interpreters.

TINS 402 Applied Translation Studies
(3 0 3) ECTS 6

The course involves a set of translation activities based on texts taken from sources related to various fields of study. The use of language in written, printed texts will be analyzed; Texts related to various disciplines such as science, technology, media, medicine, economics, law, arts, sociology, psychology, history, philosophy, culture, etc. will be translated. Besides, practice on finding out the best equivalents of domain-specific terminology will be done.

TINS 403 Comparative Literature
(3 0 3) ECTS 6

This course introduces students to world literature as a global phenomenon in that it reflects universal human experiences. At the same time, world literature appears in the context of specific local and temporal circumstances. The course proceeds chronologically with an emphasis on genres (poetry, drama, prose) and themes (the hero, women’s role in society, values and beliefs, etc.) from the earliest times to the seventeenth century.

TINS 404 Audiovisual Translation
(3 0 3) ECTS 6

Dubbing and subtitling (audiovisual) translation provides a theoretical framework for prospective translators and subtitlers, and also hands-on training through dubbing and subtitling translation workshops from English to Turkish.  The course aims to make students realize and evaluate the role of an audio-visual translator with a special emphasis on subtitling in order to equip them with the necessary techniques and technology, and with the audio-visual discourse. Students will be translating audiovisual materials from different sources like movies, documentaries, etc. as a part of their projects. The course aims to understand the voice-over practice in Turkey from different example clips with special attention to lip-syncing (synchronization issues), the language rewording (condensation and reformulation), time and space limits, etc.

TINS 405 Research in Translation Studies

This course provides a basic introduction to the principles, methods, and techniques of empirical social research. On the other hand, the students will also be provided with necessary knowledge and skills on consecutive interpreting, as a method preferred in certain conferences along with simultaneous interpretation.

Driven by the new theoretical and applied academic studies both in the main and related fields, as well as by the developments and practices in high technology and translation industry, the course aims to provide students with detailed information to help them catch up with the research, trends and practices in the 21st century. Being interdisciplinary in nature, translation studies have been highly influenced by the theoretical issues in linguistics, sociology, ethnography, etc. to turn to more detailed analyses of texts for more effective translated products. On the other hand, although human translation is the most ancient form of translation and is also the most reliable even today, artifical intelligence, i.e., machine translation (MT) in particular, has brought forth increasing capabilities for various stages of translation. Furthermore, translation industry in the world expects the translator to accommodate his/her work to the latest technology to keep the pace with the market requirements. When the future for the translator market over the years ahead is considered, among the required skills of 21st century translator are MT post-editing, transcreation, localization, translation quality assessment, etc., in addition to a raised awareness of the developments in language and cognitionrelated sciences. The course involves teaching students the fundamentals of writing formal letters both in Turkish and English. In this respect, syntactic, stylistic, pragmatic and sociolinguistic aspects of letters used in formal communication are analyzed, Students learn how to write popular formal letters. They study useful words and expressions widely employed in formal letter writing, along with tips for making business letters look professional. Also, students learn how to add enclosures and attachments in formal letters and emails. They are asked to translate pieces of formal writing from Turkish into English, and vice versa

This course aims to develop students’ understanding of how to analyse a range of media genres, drawing on (critical) discourse analysis and conversation analysis. In written discourse, headlines and elements such as coherence, cohesion, and use of modals in media discourse are analysed while in spoken discourse, elements such as the use of politeness maxims, interruptions, and evasion are examined within the context of translation. The course focuses on the acquisition of the skills necessary for consecutive interpreting, such as active-attentive listening, efficient word recognition, listening comprehension, focus and concentration, anticipation, inferencing, note-taking, multi-tasking, automatization, written-oral text analysis, mini summaries, hierarchy of ideas, and mind-mapping. The course emphasizes various strategies used in consecutive interpreting, such as paraphrasing, splitting sentences, omitting, generalization, and mental rehearsal along with memory strategies. Further emphasis is on translator intelligence, memory, context, relevance, multiple encoding, and translator’s learning styles.

TINS 454 Consecutive Interpreting II

The course focuses on advanced consecutive interpreting skills: analysis of the structure of speeches, analysis of the organization and development of ideas, identifying main and subordinate ideas. Emphasis on practice activities that centre around recognition of the core ideas and messages, note-taking, multi-tasking, automatization, and mental rehearsal along with memory strategies. Further emphasis is on how to merge the subliminal “flow” state and conscious analytical state during the interpreting process.

TINS 455 Community and Disaster Interpreting

This course covers the basics of Community Interpreting where it is needed. The course gives more advanced interpreting practice to assess the students’ interpreting abilities and provides them with the qualifications necessary to become community interpreters.

TINS 470 Translation Project

Focusing on translation of different kinds of texts (e.g. informative, expressive, operative or audio-medial) according to the respective theories along with justifications for them. Investigation of the macro-aspect of the acts of translation and interpreting.

TINS 471 Dubbing and Subtitling I

The course aims to make students realize and evaluate the role of an audio-visual translator with a special emphasis on subtitling in order to equip them with the necessary techniques and technology, and with the audio-visual discourse.

TINS 472 Dubbing and Subtitling II
(2 2 3) ECTS 5

A continuation of the previous course (TINS 471), this course aims to evaluate authentic texts translated and/or dubbed by students. Students are required to make presentations, and the presentations are followed by critique and discussion. The prospects of audio-visual translation industry together with the socio-cultural and linguistic dimensions of the translated works are taken into consideration in this evaluation.

TINS 473 Special Topics in Conference Interpreting

The aim of the course is to inform students about specific interpreting skills they require to work as professional conference interpreters for international organisations or as freelancers operating at multinational events like political conventions, academic conferences, etc. Professional interpreters need a comprehensive academic grounding and a good working command of these techniques.

Translators nowadays work with numerous documents including literary texts, web pages, legal papers, instructional guides, brochures, and etc. Interpreters, however, enable communication in different contexts such as international conferences and events, business meetings, video seminars, or criminal justice proceedings. Interpreting and translation relates to disciplines such as language studies, linguistics, comparative literature and cultural studies. In this course students are introduced to the diverse areas of translation depending on the material they are required to translate or interpret.

TINS 475 Terminology Studies for Conference Interpreting

The crucial differences between translation and interpreting, types of interpreting with particular emphasis on conference interpreting, and modes of conference interpreting. The concept of terminology and its importance for interpreting profession is defined. The course covers terminology management tools, including some research studies on their availability and productivity in conference interpreting, as well as the status of terminology today.

TINS 481 Summer Practice II
ECTS 5

Enables students to work as a trainee for a government institution or a private translation agency for a matter of twenty working days during the summer period. This initial work experience helps them develop professional awareness and equip them with opportunities for network and professional experience, thereby preparing them for their initial year as novice translators.
